2 juveniles charged in Kansas City Super Bowl parade shooting

A pair of juveniles have been charged in connection to Wednesday’s deadly shooting following the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade.

“The juveniles are currently detained in secure detention at the Juvenile Detention Center on gun-related and resisting arrest charges,” the Jackson County Family Court Division said in a Friday statement.

Court officials believe additional charges may be filed as the Kansas City Police Department continues its investigation. Juvenile hearings are not open to the public in Missouri and no more information is available at this time.

A third juvenile was also taken into custody following the violence that left one woman dead and 22 people wounded outside Kansas City’s Union Station. But that person was later released after police determined they were not involved in the shooting.

Investigators believe the bloodshed was the result of a personal dispute between multiple people after the parade.

Kansas City radio personality Lisa Lopez-Galvan died in Wednesday’s gunfire, according to KKFI-FM, which confirmed her death with “sincere sadness” on Facebook. Lopez-Galvan was attending the parade with her husband and adult son, who was also wounded in the shootings.

Popstar Taylor Swift — who flew to Australia to perform rather than attending the parade with her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — donated $100,000 to the family of the slain radio host, known locally as “Lisa G.” Kelce and his teammates were all on hand for Wednesday’s festivities, but no players or team staff members were wounded in the gunfire.

Kansas City officials believe the parade attracted a million people. City Manager Brian Platt earlier told local public radio station KCUR that Swift’s potential attendance at the celebration could raise unique security concerns, but Mayor Quinton Lucas followed up with a statement saying he’d spoken to the city’s police chief and been assured “the women and men of our police department are prepared to keep all safe.” Over 800 police officers were on the scene at the time of the shootings.

Lucas said Wednesday he was angry over the violence that unfolded while praising officers’ response to the chaos.

“I am as heartbroken as anybody,” the mayor said. “I hope we bring whoever did this is to justice.”

Video shared online showed a group of Chiefs fans tackling one suspect believed to be involved in the shooting and holding him down until police arrived. It’s unclear if that person is one of the juveniles still in custody.
